Being a graduate student is a soul-sucking experience, and the MIT Brain & Cognitive Sciences dept is especially rough. - Avis employé Graduate Student Researcher MIT

Avantages

Amazing minds of faculty and grad students; lots of great talks and events at MIT and surrounding schools; great grad student administrators

Inconvénients

Faculty expect a ridiculous amount; there's little support when you become depressed and fall behind and out of touch (as many of the students I talked to did at some point or other); not much camaraderie and support between grad students compared to other departments I've seen

Avantages

High quality core facilities and well resourced labs. Countless brilliant colleagues who can serve as mentors and collaborators

Inconvénients

Students and Postdocs are expensive due to high overhead, so unreasonably high productivity is often expected compared to other institutions. PIs are typically stretched very thin. Most departments/labs are very space limited which makes it harder to do safe and productive research.
