Apply on USAjobs.gov for the locations you want and wait to get a call back. Be sure that you apply for the correct position. Read the posting. Call the HR department in case you have any questions about the forms that you need to submit. It doesn't hurt to actually visit the ranger district you'd like to work out of and ask to speak with the fire AFMO, or crew bosses. Call first, they'd appreciate that.

Question 1
As a vet, I was offered a job at every location i applied to. I was asked if I'd like to be on the engine or handcrew.
Nearly nonexistent. Some coworkers were hired without an interview. If you want this job and you meet the qualifications you will get it. Job will be almost all grunt work and cleaning. Do not listen to grand promises.
