30 minute call with technical manager followed by coding challenge.
When I first had the phone call, I was excited and hopeful about the company. Unfortunately, the atrocious experience I had with the coding portion left a bad taste in my mouth, and I do not recommend any engineers interview with Science37.
The coding challenge was a week long take home assignment, requiring responsive design, with a list of functionalities that the reviewers were looking for. If they liked the code, it would be taken to a panel code review.
I spent 5 hours a day on this assignment, including the labor day weekend, as I wanted to hit every checkmark on the requirements. The only requirement I did not complete was the unit testing, but beyond that, I was really proud of the submission.
The problems began after I submitted my code. I did not hear anything for a week after submitting my code. I sent a check in email asking for an update - and there was no response. Another week later, I email them again and again, no response. A total of three weeks later I ask my recruiter to message them because I've been pretty much ghosted at this point, and I get a response a couple days later.
The response was less than two sentences long, with just a list of negatives, completely ignoring anything good about the submission. I matched the design document exactly, even taking color picking tools to get the hex codes of backgrounds and font colors. I made sure to check for numerous edge cases, and commented my code well. It felt as if my application as an after thought, it felt as if the hiring managers at Science37 were too busy and had an engineer who was also too busy look at the code for 5 minutes and not even test it.
This is completely unprofessional, and frankly unacceptable. How can you ask a candidate to give you a week of their time, yet you take almost a month to give feedback, and at that, extremely short feedback. I never received any email responses directly from the company regarding my submissions, everything I got I received from my recruiter.
Do not apply to Science37.
