They needed someone ASAP and I was available ASAP, plus it was a good fit! They offered me the job the night of the interview. When we hired other people later on, it was really important to us that the person was also young and eager to learn / gain experience for med/ grad school. If they weren't sure they wanted to job we would skip them since in that case they probably wouldn't like the job. I wouldn't have gotten the interview unless I had met someone in the office. I volunteered in a different department for about 6 months before getting this opportunity. They love referrals because it makes it easy for them! Raking through the HR website isn't easy for the hiring managers.
