I had a really good experience with Gemba's interview process. It started with an informal chat with Amber, the Talent Acquisition Manager, where we discussed my background, motivations, and Gemba's company culture. This was a very open conversation, allowing me to ask plenty of questions.
The next stage was a values interview with Amber and a senior engineer. They asked competency based questions to assess how my values align with Gemba's culture and how I've handled various work situations, particularly focusing on team dynamics and work environments.
The technical interview was with a principal engineer and a senior engineer. It covered a wide range of software engineering topics, starting with front-end theory, then React specific questions, backend development, a code review, and DevOps/Containerisation. The technical interview was challenging in parts, as I came from a front-end background, so some of the backend and containerisation topics were a bit trickier. However, the interview wasn't designed to catch me out, but rather to gauge my overall knowledge across different technical areas. The interviewers were supportive and gave helpful feedback on areas for improvement.
Throughout the entire process, Amber kept me updated, and the process itself was smooth. It wasn’t overly lengthy but provided ample opportunity to learn about Gemba’s values, culture, and technical expectations.
