Advertised on indeed as $15-20/hr but really $12 plus commission for sales on wax passes. Email on indeed asking me to answer some base questions (distance from location, availability, comfort level with sales goals, etc). Phone interview a week after application then in person interview about 5 days after that.
To prep, I scoured Glassdoor reviews on the interview process and employment experiences. Not great reviews, but okay enough that I was still willing to give them a chance still.
In-person Interview started about 15 min late, so already a bit leery. Lasted about 45 min, a bit more thorough than most customer service/front desk roles in my experience but generally fine.
Day after, received an email requesting that I send 2-3 references, a photo, a bio (bit about you, why you want to work here, & why you think you’d be a good fit), copy of social, and copy of ID in an email.
Instantly rubbed me the wrong way for a few reasons:
1. A photo seems a bit odd to ask for when you’ve already seen me in person, even if I’m allowing some grace for this role to technically be in the beauty industry
2.All the bio questions were both asked and answered in both previous interviews
3. You’re asking for sensitive identification documents in an unsecured email before I’ve even been offered the position or been asked to sign off agreeing to a background check?? And these are items that even after becoming an employee, legally they shouldn’t be keeping copies of my identifying info in any kind of unsecured way. This already feels like a Human Resources violation before I even work for you
They ended up calling a few hours after sending email requesting this info to make sure I’d received it, and I asked if this was part of a conditional offer (ie. I’m in as long as background check and references come back) or how exactly their process works. They said that as a franchise location they had to send this packet of info to their franchise headquarters for approval before extending an offer. So not only are they asking for personal info that is already questionable before offering me the position but you’re also sending it to additional unknown persons within your franchise. So only further made me uncomfortable with what they were asking.
Spoke to some peers about it who agreed with me feelings of hesitation based on these practices, so I ended up withdrawing from consideration and made a glassdoor account just to share because it seemed off enough that I thought others should be warned.
