J'ai postulé via un recruteur. Le processus a pris 1 jour. J'ai passé un entretien chez Canva (Sydney) en nov. 2023

      Entretien

During my first interview with a recruiter, the one-on-one conversation turned into a 40-minute rapid-fire questioning session that left much to be desired. The lack of empathy was evident, with the recruiter displaying no signs of engagement or interest. Surprisingly, the interview omitted any discussion about Canva's culture or values, and there was no exploration of creativity or innovation. What added to the disappointment was the absence of an in-depth conversation about the opportunities at Canva. It felt like a one-sided dialogue solely focused on my career rather than the expected two-way conversation. This departure from Canva's reputation for fostering a dynamic and creative environment left me with a mediocre view of their hiring process. I hope they reconsider their approach to provide a more meaningful and balanced candidate experience."

Overall, Canva's recruiter was very organized and easy to communicate with. They gave me clear and prompt feedback after each interview round. However, their design interviewing process showed some cracks in their internal Design culture: 1. Design candidates are given a broad, take-home task where you are expected to deliver end-to-end assets, from wireframes and flows to high-fidelity, interactive prototypes, and business strategy ideas for implementing the idea. I intentionally limited the amount of time I spent on the exercise, but still ended up spending 6–8 hours on it. Candidates aren't compensated for their time. During my interview, I received negative feedback for spending too little time on one step (user story mapping). They seemed to expect unlimited time investment from candidates. 2. The take-home task also included one pre-alignment meeting with a Design Lead, before the final presentation for the take home task. I ran a design thinking workshop, where the Design Lead asked me prioritize to one theme (Social Impact) over other considerations like Feasibility and Business Impact. I mentioned this in my final presentation to all of the interviewers, which included the Design Lead. But the final feedback was that I prioritized Social Impact too much. I was surprised, given that this direction was given to me by the Design Lead. Their recruitment process was smooth, but I could see miscommunication and misalignment within the Product and Design team. I had the impression that Designs who work towards clear, pre-defined business targets will thrive at Canva, rather than Designers who think outside the box and push the envelope. My other suggestion to Canva is to not over-index too much on the solutions that candidates present from take-home exercises, since it's only an illustrative, time-constrained exercise. Instead, consider solution-agnostic qualities like product thinking, craft, and communication/collaboration.

How much time did you spend on this exercise? How did you land on the final solution's feature set?

I was really excited to apply for a role at Canva and the HR pack they send you once you get into the interview process is really inspiring and made me want to get the job even more, however the interview process was horrible. Recruiter interview - they weren’t interested in my career up until this point, they only seemed interested in my current role. Was a good interview but it took weeks to schedule the next interview. Portfolio review - I met two lovely Designers who asked interesting questions and gave me great answers to my questions. I got really positive feedback but also some really weird feedback. I think the reason for this weird feedback is that again, they seemed to only focus on what I had or hadn’t done in my current job. Ie. “we think an area for development for you would be X as you haven’t done that in your role” - Yes that’s correct but I’ve also worked in other roles where I have done these things… I won’t go into specifics but it was weird. Design challenge - I didn’t end up doing this as I accepted another role due to how long the Canva process was taking. I think this part is a bit convoluted. They send over the design challenge and then schedule in a 15 min chat with a Designer to answer any questions you might have. Honestly if they had worded the design challenge better, this step wouldn’t have been required. I didn’t think Canva would be the kind of company to give out Design Challenges like this but it was your typical, “do this huge piece of work, we only expect you to spend 2-3 hours on it” kind of deal. We all know that’s not what they expect by now. After I emailed Canva to thank them for their time and to let them know I had accepted another role, and I was ghosted. I guess all the unicorns and fairy dust had run out that day. If you’re considering interviewing at Canva, be aware that: - you won’t know which role you’re interviewing for - the salary is not competitive - you will need to be very very patient when waiting on communication as they are SLOW - be prepared for some weird feedback (I saw another review saying something similar had happened to them) Looks like a cool company but it’s not for me.
