    Avantages

Working there as a student is the best, just one or two days, so no or not involved with co-workers. The work itself is satisfiyng, always something to do, love the contact with customers.

    Inconvénients

youre co-workers, especially management itself in this store. I believe its different in the stores in Other country. In Belgium, they are egocentric, hatefull And bullies. You'll never get the Chance to grow

    Conseils à la direction

Not to management but to CEO: Clean em all out! Start fresh! This management Will Bring this store to the ground. Its a great store for shopping, Also online, great products! But change the Staff!

J'ai travaillé chez River Island Clothing à temps partiel (Pendant plus de 3 ans)

    Avantages

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at River Island Buchanan Galleries, it has allowed me the flexibility to study whilst earning money in an environment I have thrived in. I have built great relationships, and with the support of the management team built on my retail knowledge which has supported my degree. They continually share best practice and encourage you to progress within the business should the opportunity arise. They guide us through decisions, allowing us to have a say before anything is implemented. This ensures that we are engaged as a team.
If the opportunity ever arises I would love to return after my gap year.
    Great staff discount - 40%
    Uniform allowance quarterly - 100%

    Inconvénients

Behaviour of peers - aslong as you don’t allow yourself to be easily influenced by the negativity of your peer group you will enjoy your time here.
Pay could also be more in line with industry standard

    Conseils à la direction

You have a great way of taking people with you and gaining buy in along the way. Continue to share the great wealth of knowledge you all have in the retail sector, the people who want to further their careers in this industry will thrive on it, as I have. Don’t allow the negative comments of some of the staff be a reflection on you as it couldn’t be further from the truth. I can’t thank you enough for your support over the years.

J'ai travaillé chez River Island Clothing à temps partiel (Moins d'un an)

    Avantages

    • Low effort if you are conscientious
    • Employee demographic are young people — good for building experience and learning social skills
    • Staff discounts and bonuses are quite generous

    Inconvénients

    • Very busy hours with minimal rotation, making for overworked employees
    • Stressful in and out of management – low stress threshold meant very passive aggressive remarks and conversations
    • Poor micromanagement of employees
    • Disappointing skill floor. Not much experience to build upon once you master the basics

    Conseils à la direction

Hire better management. Don’t scrounge off on and hire more competent employees to fill out weekly totals and work. Finally, understand people want to get the job done. Make more effort to make seminal connections with your employees.

J'ai travaillé chez River Island Clothing à temps partiel (Moins d'un an)

    Avantages

    Great staff discount
    Decent uniform allowance
Salary is better than most places for a part-time student job
I was told there were many opportunities for rapid promotion

    Inconvénients

Management were often not friendly, discouraging, and even upsetting at times. I left after three months as I felt overwhelmed by the atmosphere, and often left work crying and exhausted. Although I worked in one of the busiest stores in London, I found it was often an isolating experience.

    Conseils à la direction

I found that my morale was often quite low working at River Island, and I know it was the same for some of my colleagues. I was told there was a catty environment, and that sales assistants generally did not stay for longer than a month or two. I genuinely thought at first that this was an exaggeration, but unfortunately I found I had the same experience. I tend to think this was because management staff did not take the time to get to know part-time staff - most of my managers did not know my name after three months working on the shop floor. In fact, when I called up to quit, the manager I spoke to acted as if she had never heard of me - she had been working with me for at least a third of my shifts. As a result, I felt I was often not appreciated or cared for in the workplace, and instead seen as someone to dump jobs (or blame) on. I was given around half an hour of formal training, and if I made (only very minor) mistakes or didn't feel confident completing a task, I was often shouted at, ignored, or spoken to in a patronising manner instead of having someone take the time to help me out. It actually really affected my self esteem and I have never experienced that in a place of work before, nor have I since. I would like to point out that I was absolutely not inexperienced, and I had had multiple previous jobs in both retail and hospitality, so I was no stranger to customer service.

I would implore management to recognise that your staff are your most important asset and if you do not treat them well, it will reflect on their performance. I think my experience would have been so much better if I had been allowed the time to ask questions, forge better relationships with my managers and my colleagues, and to adjust to the environment and brand's values.

    Avantages
